FY 2009 Health Promotion / Disease
Prevention [HP/DP] Awards Program
The overriding purpose of the Division of Oral Health HP/DP Awards Program is to foster local prevention initiatives. Secondary objectives of the program include increasing the quality of proposals and of program planning through feedback, sharing outstanding proposals, and presentations based on analysis of the characteristics of successful proposals.
Two types of awards were announced and awarded this year: mini HP/DP awards for a maximum of $2,000, and HP/DP awards with a maximum of $15,000.
All proposals were reviewed and scored by multiple reviewers. Proposals were rank ordered, and funded in descending order of average score until all available resources were expended.
Six of nine [67] proposals for mini-awards were funded; 12 or 24 [50] of proposals for full awards were funded. Overall, 55 of all proposals that were submitted received funding.
A sample of proposed interventions that received relatively high scores follows:
- Expansion of a dental sealant program into satellite clinics
- An initiative to increase performance relative to all three dental GPRA objectives [access to care, patients receiving topical fluoride, and placement of dental sealants]
- A school based dental sealant program
- Correlation of Streptococcus mutans and caries experience among local children
- Preventive pre-natal information and care for moms
Primary authors of funded proposals for mini-awards include Carol LaPointe, Tim Ambrose, Diane Weidley, William Elton, Sandra Ferguson, and Nicole Glines. Primary authors of funded proposals for HP/DP awards include Colleen White, Kimberly Nigg, Mary Ellen Volansky, Julie Rattler, Stuart Holmes, Ann Toledo, Bridget Austin, Tad Mabry, Delores Starr and Cindy Delong in a collaborative effort, Linda Stone, Ayana Blagrove and Nixon Roberts in a collaborative effort, and Linda Mann. Congratulations to these individuals on their successful proposals. Thanks to all who participated in this annual process, including everyone who volunteered to review proposals and those who submitted worthwhile proposals that were not funded due to limited resources.
Final reports from all projects are due upon completion of the intervention. A synopsis of characteristics of successful proposals will be presented to all interested individuals, either at the IHS Dental Updates course or at the National Oral Health Conference. Interested individuals should contact Dr. Patrick Blahut [patrick.blahut@ihs.gov] for additional details. Each year additional new reviewers are needed for this project. Anyone interested in volunteering to review approximately four proposals in the fall of 2009 should contact Dr. Blahut.
